The Ubuntu Expedition

January 28, 2009

The Crappy LappyThis week, I found myself without a decent working loaner laptop for the first time in a long time. And I needed to head into the office. And I needed to work on the train. So, I was left with no option but to pull out my old Dell Inspiron from 2002… Yes that hideous thing you see above.

Considering that it was slower than a sloth on Sunday, I decided to give Ubuntu a good old college try as my OS of choice. I downloaded the ISO file last night, burnt it to disk this morning, and tried to install it before I left for work. That didn’t work…

So I booted up XP, worked painfully slowly on the train, got to the office and tried again. And despite how long it took, I actually got it working – and the process was relatively pain free.

I haven’t tested it out fully yet – the battery went dead by the time I was on the train home to use it – but it seems to actually be not only functional, but comparatively speedy and efficient. I’m not that surprised – I had heard good things beforehand. It’s just nice to have a decent experience with a “PC”…

The problem now is that I have another loaner, and I doubt I’ll pull out the Inspiron again any time son, even to play with Ubuntu. I mean, I can play with Windows 7 now, and that’s the more exciting of the two, right? Right?

Another Giz Milestone

January 23, 2009

So this week marked my one year anniversary at the helm of Gizmodo… and what a year it has been!

Here are some figures to mull over:
Monthly unique browsers in December 2007 – 220,240
Monthly unique browsers in December 2008 – 678,311 (and keep in mind that December is a slightly quieter month thanks to Christmas/New Years. November 2008 had over 800,000 uniques).

Monthly pageviews in December 2007 – 967,297
Monthly pageviews in December 2008 – 2,964,645

So, as you can see, it’s been a good year for Giz. And a good year for me. Here’s hoping we can maintain the growth for the next 12 months…

Looking Back At 2008

December 31, 2008

On the last day of 2008, I thought it would be prudent to sit back and look at the year that’s been. All told, Lauren and I have had a very big – and successful – year. After all, I started at Gizmodo, we got married, I travelled around a bit and now Lauren’s been promoted to manager of her work. Not a bad year for a couple in the penultimate year of their 20s…

And to think that this time last year I was in a state of turmoil. I’d just signed the contract for the job at Giz AU, and while I knew I’d be earning more money, I essentially needed to start running my work life like I was running my own business (which, technically, is what I’m doing), and that was a daunting prospect. On top of that, Lauren and I were in the final stretch for wedding preparations, and the costs were climbing every day it seemed. Last Christmas was a very budget affair, and it made it harder for us to know that we were climbing into more and more debt.

But then January came around – I started at Giz, and everything started getting better. By the time the wedding arrived in March, we were already much more at ease and although I have never been more nervous than I was on our wedding day, everything was better than perfect, including the Fijian honeymoon.

On the work front, things have just continued to expand. When I started in January at Giz, we had a monthly readership of about 250,000. In November, we cracked 800,000. Plus, we’ve just been announced as a finalist for best Australian blog in the 2008 Weblog Awards. And despite a handful of frustrating moments over the past year at work, looking back at what I’ve achieved gives me a nice warm feeling in my sub-cockle area.

Outside of the whole work and wedding spectrum – we’ve finally started getting the house in proper order. We finished painting the loungeroom, got ourselves a new wall-mounted TV, bought a new Mac at the start of the year, replanted the herb garden and generally kept things moving forward. And we don’t feel like we’re struggling financially anymore. Sure, we’re not wealthy, but we’re not poor either. I guess that makes us the shining example of middle-class…

It wasn’t all good though – Lauren’s had a few health issues that weren’t a lot of fun. Most of them are under control now though, so fingers crossed we won’t have any problems for next year.

So, what for 2009, the final year of our 20s? Well, I guess we’re both hoping for a fourth and fifth addition to our little family – both a dog friend for Simba and child of our own. Hopefully I’ll finally get around to painting this hideous pink study (doing it this weekend!), as well as the rest of the house. Plus, we’ll just continue the gradual process of making our home exactly the way we want it. And in the end, I just hope that we continue to grow the way we both did this year.

Happy New Year! I hope you all have as good a 2009 as we did a 2008.

How I Organised My Workload And Emptied My Inbox

November 17, 2008

things-picTime management is not my strong point. Organisation is not my strong point. Keeping my inbox under control is definitely not my strong point… I guess you could say that I’m a bit chaotic when it comes to managing my workload.

But that’s not where I want to be. I want to be organised. I want to manage my time effectively. That’s why I jumped at the opportunity to partake in a time management seminar last week put on by the guys from BlackBerry for freelance journalists and technology bloggers like myself. It was run by a gentleman named Dermott Crowley from Adapt Training Solutions, and all I can say is that I walked away a changed man. A changed, organised man.

The seminar lasted for a couple of hours – but in those two hours I learnt enough to completely restructure my work systems so that now I can manage my time much more effectively and improve my productivity tenfold. Here’s how I did it: Read the rest of this entry ?

I Am Iron Man

May 11, 2008

Finally saw Iron Man on Saturday afternoon. If you haven’t seen it already, get out to the movies as soon as you can to check it out – it’s fantastic. Robert Downey Jr is perfect as Tony Stark… I can’t wait for the sequel to launch in 2010…

Lauren and I also picked up Wii Fit on Saturday… It’s great, although it does involve exercise, which is something my body isn’t quite used to. Which is obvious to Nintendo, apparently, because I have a Wii Fit Age of 40. Lauren’s is 20. I know, it’s a farce. :)

Saw Jordy for the first time in months today – Andy, Sarah and Lyn all came over for a Mother’s day lunch. He’s such a litle cutey. Laclan’s gorgeous too, but he wears me out so quickly. Seriously, if scientists could find a way to bottle his energy, the world would be so much more active. And I probably wouldn’t have a Wii Fit age of 40.

This week’s going to be a busy one – I’ve taken on a few freelance jobs which will be very handy money -wise, but a lot of work in the meantime. I’m also starting my PR presentations this week. Hopefully all that will go well.

What a fun day!

April 2, 2008

I saw the new work office today – it’s got three balconies and an awesome view of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. If they don’t have a New Year’s Party there this year I’ll have to eat Simba.

Speaking of the dog, I do have a few concerns about the little bugger. He’s been a bit off since we got home from Fiji. Not that that’s too much to worry about – we did leave him for roughly two weeks, after all. But he does have a circular sore on his side that is a bit worrying, and he hasn’t really been eating either. We’ll give it to the weekend to see how he pulls up.

Going through the wedding photos – there are so many good shots. Lauren’s a bit disappointed that we didn’t get to some of the locations we were hoping for down at Crystal Creek, but the hard truth of it is that we just didn’t have enough time. And I love the photos down at Hampden Bridge.

Going to a Canon event tonight – hopefully it will be awesome!
